After looking around at comments people leave on some people's, I came up with a list of things you really shouldn't be saying when leaving comments. This list consists of my own opinions, and whether you agree or disagree, it will not change my own opinions (unless you have a really good point :) ). If you're going to leave comments disagreeing with me, the please point out why, and don't just put down my opinions. I won't put down yours.

This article is not meant to be offensive to anyone in any way.

----------------------------------------------------------------

1. We don't want to join your contests 90% of the time, so please- don't ask. We don't want to draw your OC with your favorite anime character, or write you a story about yourself. Mmk? You want us to join a contest, give us a REAL contest that doesn't revolve around you and your special OC and the love of their life. But most of the time, we really don't want to join. If we did, we'd search for contests on our own time.

2.We don't care what our pictures remind you of. "OMG THAT LOOKS LIKE DANTE FROM DMC EHEHEHEHEHE--" don't do that. It really pisses off the artist. Unless it was MEANT to be fanart and a specific character. If it's supposed to be their OC or a random person, DON'T SAY THAT. We work hard to draw these things and all you can do is connect it to something else it's not supposed to be related to? Seriously?

What's even worse is "OMG THAT LOOKS LIKE MY OC!!!11!eleven!1!!" or "THAT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING FROM MY STORYY!!!1!!11!" Most of the time, we don't know who your character is, or what you're writing. Interpret the picture as you please, but some thoughts, just keep to yourself. It's rude.

3. "can you draw my character blahblahblah ok thx" Most of the time, the artist will specify if they take art trades, requests, or commissions. If they don't, ask first NICELY. Don't just shove what you want onto the artist- we're ARTISTS, WE decide what we want to draw, and we are NOT your slave. Look around to see if the artist says anything about requests/commissions before asking in the first place. If the artist posts it somewhere with stamps in clear bold letters, then there you go. If they state they DO NOT TAKE REQUESTS OR COMMISSIONS, and you ask them to draw you something, you deserve to get slapped upside the face. If they DO take requests or commissions, STILL ASK THEM FIRST IF THEY ARE WILLING TO TAKE YOUR REQUEST BEFORE SHOVING THE REQUEST ON THEM. They might be busy with others and will have to wait for yours. In short, BE POLITE.

4. "DO U LIVE IN ____? ME TOO!!!!11 THAT"S SO KEWL!" "ARE YOU ASIAN/WHITE/BLACK/EUROPEAN/ALIEN/DOG/TENTALE MONSTER/CAT TOO!?! ME TOOZ!!! UR AWESOME!!" This... has nothing to do with our art... and can be really annoying. Our ethnicity and where we live has nothing to do with anything, least of all our art. If you live in the same place as we do, good for you, let's hope we never meet. If you're the same ethnicity as us, good for you, I hope we aren't related. If you're going to post a comment, at least let it be to tell us what you think of our art, or if something's coming up (if you're friends with the artist). Don't just post this kind of stuff.... it's completely random, has nothing to do with anything, and bugs us.

tl;dr: please be polite, and we are not interested in your personal affairs 99% of the time.

(I DO CARE FOR YOU MY WATCHERS, I LOVE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU) ...Just, please don't leave comments like these- on my page, or anybody elses.

Again, these are all my opinions. Feel free to disagree.

It saddens me that something like this even needs to be SAID. It should be common sense, yet sadly it isn't. I applaud thee. :clap:

What also REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS is when an artist posts fanart of a character or a pairing and then some idiot feels the need to comment and say "Ergh, I hate that character." or even worse "I haet dat character coz she ttly stole tha main character frm meeeeeee & mah OC!!11!oneone!!1!"

Clearly if the artists took the time to draw and post said characters, they love them. So proclaiming your undying hatred is a waste of everybody's time. All you're going to do is make them MAD.

It's always a nice thing to find an article like this.... ^^ Gives me hope, 't does.

Only thing I might disagree with is the fourth point--I don't mind if people from my state/area post random "Yay for [insert location here] artists!" comments....but that could be because I take a lot of pride in where I'm from xD;;
Though, I suppose if they did it in that spastic way, I might think that they're having a seizure and need some kind of medical help. :O_o:

I don't mind it too much either, unless it's in that spastic way. XD

I apologize for the late reply as well. @-@;;;

Seen it. Still can't believe it.

You did a great article here and I for one appreciate it but one thing I have to add is that not everyone can offer constructive criticism of said artists' work. Myself, I am no artist. I post what I can and any individual can comment as he/she would care to respond. Most of my comments are short unless I feel I have something of relevance to say. Like now, for instance. There are annoyances everywhere these days, but as far as what you wrote and my response, it is my opinion and mine alone. That said, again, great article. Please, I mean no offense. Take care..:-)

And though it is true that not every person can offer constructive criticism, most of this article is just kind of picking out at the spam, and people who continuously post the same things over and over. Thanks for sharing your opinion. :3

Generally I say something about the colors or the linework or something, usually something positive, and if I'm in the mood to I tell them something they can improve on. Sometimes this leads to my comments reading more like essays :shrug: I've gotten several people noting that I leave really long comments. ^^;

I'm okay with "Great drawing XD" but it doesn't really tell me anything. I think I'm probably guilty of leaving comments like that on people's artwork, but generally I try to say something at least meaningful. What I like best are comments that tell me not only the good about my art, but areas where I can improve. (I have one commenter who gives me essays all the time, and I appreciate and sometimes act on every single one of them.) I think I've said this in other comments I've left on other articles, but I have learned from experience that as a general rule fellow artists are really appreciative if you give them good constructive criticism. It tells them you actually care about their artwork.

I've never had the OC problem :shrug: but then again I've only been a deviant for a month.

Speaking of constructive criticism...I could have done with a few less all caps; I know you did them for emphasis, but it comes across as a bit bristly. Then again that could be just my personal preference :shrug:

I think we're all a little guilty of the super-short "cute!" or "cool!" comments. I know I am. XD

And I'm sorry for my use of caps. ^^;; I'll try and cut back on them next time. Thanks for pointing that out!

Never were truer words spoken! I had to laugh when reading this, because this is totally one of my biggest pet peeves. I draw everything that I do out of my head. If it just happens to look like something you've seen or a character of yours...who cares??? It's a coincidence. Nothing more. I just had a guy the other day tell me that an OC I had a dream about had hair just like his character's. I had to point out that the hairstyle was a pretty standard male anime hairstyle. His response? "They keep stealing my 'do!!" I just rolled my eyes and proceeded to ignore that.

Seriously though, I think you're right on with these points. I know that I have gotten each and every one of them, and they have all annoyed the bejeezus out of me.

Thanks for writing this!

I totally understand how you feel; sometimes you just want to draw something really generic or simple, and it's automatically somebody else's OC or a guy from an anime. Like black emo hair. D:

I'm afraid I get a little like #4 though when I see pictures of my hometown :c Maybe not as psycho-ish, but just as hyper :XD: I'LL TRY NOT TO FROM NOW ON. :noes:

Hi, You don't know me, but I liked your article. And I agree with you. I have this commenter, and they comment on every thing.... for the most part. And most often then not it's just "nice", or "cool". And I think they want me to say thank you or something. Lame! But back to your article, Nicely put. I'm glad that someone put it out there. Thank you for trying to save the world from shit commenter's. Enjoy everything!

I agree. I used to get the randomest comments (and still sort of do) from one particular person. Everything he comments on (and I mean EVERYTHING), it's something to the effect of "lol" or "wut" or "cool". Never anything actually meaningful. It's actually really annoying because I sit here like "Okay..thanks douchebag. That's what the favorite button is for."

I mean, it's nice when a random person that doesn't normally comment says something praiseworthy about a deviation (even if it is just "cool"), but from the same person over and over and over again, ugh..that's super annoying.

Hopefully I got my point across, even if it is in a state of rambling. lol;;

Great job on this, though. I love it. :3

That must've been really annoying. For me, I had some of the same people commenting constantly, but they commented meaningful things, which made me happy. c: People who just keep posting same one-worders get... tiring. (I mean yeah I'm happy you're looking at my stuff but c'mon... say something worthwhile or just fav and run, please!)
